With a complex coastal landscape in a densely populated area, residents in the Portsmouth area have seen investment into a wide range of projects that help provide much needed storm and erosion resilience. Take a below at some of the current projects underway.
The Southsea Coastal Scheme is the UK’s largest local authority-led coastal defence project, worth more than £160M. Stretching for 4.5km from Old Portsmouth to Eastney, the scheme will help reduce the risk of flooding to more than 10,000 homes and 700 businesses.
With funding secured in 2025 from Chichester District Council, Havant Borough Council and the Environment Agency, work is now underway on auditing the harbour’s defences – this data will inform solutions to improve the flood resilience of local communities and address rising sea levels resulting from climate change.
