There is a priority need to improve the existing defences at Alverstoke as they currently only provide a 1 in 20 year standard of flood protection.
New defences are being planned to protect against a 1 in 100 year event until 2060, protecting at least 114 properties. Whilst the probability of flooding may seem quite low in any one year, the effects have been devastating in the past where the required level of flood protection has not been in place.
Funding has been problematic, but as of March 2026, the scheme was awarded an additional £7,631,604.40 of Flood Defence Grant in Aid funding from the Environment Agency. This closed a recognised funding gap, allowing the scheme to progress.
Further investigation works have now begun, with Coastal Partner’s Geomatic team undertaking cutting-edge surveys with Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) equipment. The survey data will help us build a more detailed understanding of the existing ground conditions and any buried infrastructure, which will provide valuable information to support the design and planning process.
