Construction works for the new bridge have been progressing at Langstone. The County Council anticipates it will be completed towards the end of October, and the path and footbridge will be re-opened to public use by November. We appreciate your patience while we carry out these works, which will ensure the Public Footpath 56 remains available into the future.
On 30 September 2026, Chichester Harbour Conservancy (CHC) received a report of a potential pollution incident at the site of the new bridge, which took place on 29 September 2026. The report commented on the turbidity of the water and the possibility that the cloudiness was caused by dry cement entering the harbour. However, CHC Officers investigated the site and found no evidence of cement contamination; therefore, the most likely cause of the increased turbidity on that day was a combination of dispersed sediment from the building works, a high tide, and windy conditions.
The footbridge project is being managed by Hampshire County Council.
Works to install the new bridge on Langstone Footpath 56 are scheduled to recommence during the week beginning 31 August.
For the safety of the public and construction team, Langstone Footpath 56 will be closed with no public access permitted for the duration of the works.
Users are requested to follow the diversion route while the closure is in place. The diversion has been established to allow continued access through the area and should be used by all walkers and other path users.
