North Portsea Island Phase 4b Update September 2022

Clear Views

In September we reached the last exciting milestone for this construction year: the installation of the third and longest stretch of glass flood wall along the Harbourside Park.

As a result of the collective efforts between Portsmouth City Council, Coastal Partners, designer Royal Haskoning and contractor Mackley, and through efficiencies within the budget, funding was found for a total of 375 metres (over 400 yards) of glass flood wall to be installed in 3 different locations: the Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre, Tudor Sailing Club and Harbourside Park.

To install the flood glass it is slotted in between two upright aluminium posts which are bolted to bases cast into the concrete wall. The posts have waterproof seals to prevent any water from getting through. The individual glass sections are 2.5 or 3 meters wide and 1 meter high, consisting of 3 sheets of 12 millimetres glass. Some panels weigh in at around 350kg each, which is about the same weight as a polar bear or a grand piano.

Early bird work

You may have noticed additional fencing and a haul route appearing at the south end of Eastern Road. This is all in preparation for our next construction year. We pause work from October to April to protect overwintering birds. With the compound space ready, we will be able to hit the ground running once we return in the Spring.

The coastal path here will remain open for the break up to the pedestrian crossing towards Tangier Road. All other diversions will remain in place.
