South Hayling Beach Management - Autumn 2026

South Hayling beaches are frequently exposed to large waves and high tides, especially during winter storms. To prevent properties from flooding when these factors arise Coastal Partners on behalf of Havant Borough Council undertake beach management works along the Frontage. These works are carried out twice a year, once in spring to replenish the beach levels following the winter storm season and once in autumn to prepare the beach for the approaching winter season.

Much of the beach management works involve shingle recycling, which is the movement of material from areas of the beach where it has built up then deposited in areas of the beach where erosion has occurred. This kind of beach management uses natural processes and helps to restore the beach profile, increasing the level of protection against the flooding of many properties along the Eastoke frontage at Hayling Island. 

This Autumn’s beach recycling campaign will reinstate the height and width of the beach crest ahead of the 2026/27 winter season. Material for the project will be sourced from Gunner Point, the Coastguard Revetment and areas of open beach along the southern frontage.

Our Beach Management Contractor Les Searle Earthmoving Ltd will be setting up equipment along the Eastoke frontage week commencing 21st September in preparation for the Beach Management works which are due to start on Monday 28th September 2026, lasting for approximately 4 weeks.

During the works a haulage route will be in place between Gunner Point and the Eastoke Frontage. The beach will remain open with safety barriers and warning signs in place at key points. The haulage route will be marked with traffic cones at 50-metre intervals along the beach.

Please exercise caution as heavy machinery will be operating on the beach. Please keep yourselves, young children and animals safe by staying behind the barriers and keep dogs on leads when around heavy equipment.
