South Hayling Beach Management September 2025
Beach Recycling and flood defence works begin on Hayling Island.
On 15th September, our Beach Management Contractor, Les Searle Group, started moving shingle from Gunner Point back to Eastoke. We work with nature to reuse this material to rebuild the flood defences, and it is important that this is completed before the winter storm season sets in. Beach management provides greater flood risk protection to over 700 homes and businesses on South Hayling, with the Environment Agency fully funding this work. It has successfully maintained the area's safety for over 30 years.
As in previous years, the contractor will establish a haul road from Eastoke to Gunner Point, ready to begin transporting the shingle back to Eastoke by truck. The haul road will be marked with cones and signage. It will be regularly inspected with Beach Marshals in place for safety and coordination.
The beaches will remain open to the public, although the haul road will need to cross the Blue Flag beach area at Beachlands. As the movement of heavy equipment along the beach may impact the experience of beach users the Blue Flag will be taken down for the remainder of the season - which this year was due to end on Tuesday 30 September.
The campaign will last approximately 4 weeks, with working hours along the beach between 6 am and 10 pm on a standard day. The dredger depositing material onto the beach will work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please keep yourselves and young children safe by staying behind any barriers and keep dogs on leads around heavy equipment.
