South Hayling Beach Work – October 2022

17th November 2022 UPDATE

The dredging vessel has been repaired and is due to restart work on Friday 18th November.

After securing funding from the Environment Agency, Havant Borough Council will be carrying out nourishment of the beach at Eastoke. A maintenance dredge of Chichester Harbour Approach Channel will take place, with shingle material pumped ashore to restore beach levels prior to the winter period.

When will it happen?

The dredging works will last for up to 10 days. The work is dependent on the weather conditions; if the wind speed and/or wave heights are too large the works will stop until the weather improves.

The Contractor will be operating over the full 10 day period, but for only 4-5 hours over each high tide. Due to the time of the tides changing throughout the contract, the actual working times will vary each day. It is expected that it will take approximately 1 hour to pump each load on to the beach, and we are anticipating two loads each high tide. The works will run over the 24 hours period, 7 days a week. High tide times are illustrated below.

The land-based movement of shingle on the beach will start during week commencing 14th November 2022. These works will last for up to two weeks on site. The land-based machinery will work Monday to Friday only, with working permitted between 6am and 10pm daily.

For both sets of works, the hours will depend on the weather conditions. Should conditions on site deteriorate all works will stop until the weather has improved. This means that the dates provided in this information may vary. Should this happen, we will update this webpage with the information.
