Southsea Beach West - Clarence Esplanade - Promenade Repairs - Phase 2
Phase 2 of essential repairs are being carried out along the promenade at Southsea Beach West following substantial damage sustained by storm Barra in December 2021.
Our contractors Avon Construction Ltd will be undertaking the repairs on behalf of Portsmouth City Council.
Works are due to begin on Monday 21st February 2022 and will last for approximately 5 days. Hours of work will be 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday.
Proposed works include:
- Construction of a seaward, reinforced concrete upstand matching the original promenade height to protect the edge.
- Installation of handrail matching existing ones on the seafront.
Roadside parking bays will be secured to ensure a safe working area for the concrete lorry and workers.
The promenade in this area will remain closed until completion of the repairs and resurfacing by Colas.
A supervisor will be on site.

Sandbags temporarily in place to minimise sediment loss
Please note:
- These are emergency repairs to address the failed promenade, not works to address the loss of sediment or damaged Beach Club septic tank.
- Utility companies have been informed of the exposed services in this area.
- Colas installed sandbags in December to minimise sediment loss over the Christmas Period.
- Repairs to fill voids and secure the promenade were completed in January 2022.
