The Environment Agency gave final approval in December 2012 to construct the Eastoke Point Coastal Defence scheme which, in combination with other beach management activities, provides vital protection against flooding to 1743 Hayling Island properties.
Planning permission was granted for the much needed scheme in December 2012. The scheme is expected to cost just over £5 million and is being 100% grant funded by Defra through Flood Defence Grant in Aid.
Coastal Partners began construction on-site in May 2013. The final work included;
- Construction of a 650-metre rock revetment, stretching eastwards from midway between the Nutbourne Road and Bosmere Road access points, around Sandy Point nature reserve, to join the existing revetment at Eastoke Point.
- Raising the level of the beach in front of the new rock structures using over 35,000 tonnes of new imported beach material.
- Replacement of four dilapidated timber groynes with three new and more effective rock groynes.
- Refurbishment of the concrete splash wall at the back of the promenade including a new surface coating that will significantly extend the life of the wall.
- Improvements to access arrangements at Nutbourne Road and Bosmere Road.
Completion of the works along with other beach management activities will provide a 1 in 200 year standard of flood protection to over 1743 properties and offer protection to important habitats within the Sandy Point nature reserve.
