Eastoke Scheme Development

The Eastoke Point Coastal Defence Study considered 7 options in detail. After careful evaluation and consultation the following option was the preferred recommended option.

Rock revetment with groynes, recharge and recycling

  • Groyne replacement or improvement
  • Rock revetment
  • Improvement or installation of splash wall
  • Beach recharge
  • Groyne maintenance
  • Revetment maintenance
  • Maintain splash wall
  • Beach recycling and management

The Environment Agency gave technical approval to commence detailed design of the scheme on the August 5, 2010. The Eastern Solent Coastal Partnership then began to move forward the necessary planning and environmental consents needed to enable the main scheme to be constructed.

In the process of developing the detailed designs for the scheme the Eastern Solent Coastal Partnership consulted and worked in partnership with various parties to ensure a coastal defence solution that is sustainable, adaptable, economically feasible and technically viable.

A number of organisations and groups were involved in the design process, including:

  • Environment Agency
  • Natural England
  • Hampshire County Council
  • Havant Borough Council
  • Elected Members of Hayling Island Wards
  • Local Emergency Services
  • Chichester Harbour Conservancy
  • Marine Management Organisation
  • Hampshire Biodiversity Information Centre
  • Royal National Lifeboat Institution
  • Hayling Island Sailing Club
  • HM Coastguard

Two public exhibitions were held at Eastoke in April 2012. Local residents and businesses were given the opportunity to view the proposed plans and talk with the officers about the scheme. The results from a questionnaire at the exhibition showed the proposed scheme was very well received. The majority of the feedback was very positive and fully supported the scheme. Comments taken from the results include ‘’looking forward to the rock revetment’’ and ‘’excellent exhibition and explanations.’’
