Today, there are around 2,600 properties estimated to be at risk of tidal flooding from an extreme event.
To help reduce the flood and erosion to these properties there are a wide range of coastal defences along the Selsey coastline. These include seawalls, rock revetments, groynes, and shingle beaches. Whilst regular maintenance work has been carried out on the existing groynes and seawalls, such repairs are becoming increasingly difficult because many of these structures are nearly 80 years old and need replacing due to their ageing condition.
With routine repair and maintenance of coastal defences becoming more frequent, complex, and costly, the need to review the defences and consider options for how to manage the coastline has become increasingly important.
