Southsea Beach West Shingle Recycle

Southsea Beach West Shingle Recycle

A small beach shingle recycling operation will be carried out on Southsea Beach West, to the east of Mozzarella Joe’s, which will provide added protection to the seawall and help reduce flood and erosion risk along this frontage. Works will commence 17th September 2019, taking approximately five days to complete.

 Where and what will happen?

The extraction works will take place from the Hovertravel where material is naturally building up. It will be transported by dumper truck to Southsea Beach West and placed in identified areas of erosion. These areas include in front of the seawall, and the concrete septic tank structure next to Mozzarella Joe’s restaurant.

If additional beach material is found to be required, material will be imported by road and placed directly at the deposition locations.

The work is to be carried out by Les Searle Plant Hire and Sales Ltd. and will take place Monday to Friday from 7am-7pm. Coastal maintenance works are funded by Portsmouth City Council.

What will you experience?

The beach will remain open to the public throughout the works and there will be no disruption to the Hovertravel service.

The haul route for the operational plant runs between the extraction and deposition areas and will be clearly marked on the landward side by a line of traffic cones and warning signs. Beach marshals will also be present for public safety.

The Contractor's temporary compound will be set up in the open space behind the seawall at the eastern end of the works area. An additional compound may be established on the beach next to the Hovertravel fence line to store an excavator and bulldozer.
