Selsey West Beach Urgent Works

Where:

Urgent works to the Selsey West Beach seawall will take place at the end of West Street, at the western end of the Selsey Coastal Scheme

A section of this seawall is nearing the end of its life and a condition assessment has shown evidence of deterioration. This area has previously required emergency repairs in both 2007 and 2023.

If this section of defence were to fail before the Selsey Coastal Scheme is delivered, it could put people and homes at greater risk of flooding and erosion. It would also present a significant challenge to the Selsey Coastal Scheme, as the existing seawall is important to maintain the current defence line and provide a structure for future construction.

To reduce this risk, urgent works are now being progressed. The objective of these proactive works is to stabilise and strengthen the seawall and  extend its lifespan. This will help in protecting the area until the Selsey Coastal Scheme is delivered.

Works to be carried out:

The Selsey West Beach Urgent Works will include the installation of a steel sheet piled wall in front of the existing sheet piles and concrete apron. Concrete will be placed between the new and existing structures, and sections of the existing concrete revetment will be encased where required. The works will also involve coring into the existing structures and infilling any identified voids.

Duration:

The works are expected to take approximately 10 weeks. However, the programme may vary due to access constraints, as the site is heavily influenced by tidal conditions.

Works are planned to take place during daytime hours, between 7:00am and 7:00pm. Where possible, advance notice will be provided of any changes.

The start date of the works is currently being finalised and this webpage will be updated once this becomes available.
