Alverstoke Scheme Updates

December 2024

The approved scheme is currently on pause whilst we continue to pursue every opportunity to close the funding gap. We have collated information following the devastating flooding event in April 2024 to strengthen our case for the additional funding to protect the community as well as the local infrastructure, for example roads and the Southern Water pumping station.  In the interim, we encourage the community to sign-up to Environment Agency Flood Warnings and to take steps to make their property resilient to potential storm and flood events.

January 2024

The Alverstoke scheme remains on pause due to insufficient funding. Coastal Partners are working collaboratively with the Environment Agency to identify potential funds, although a proposed start date for the works cannot be established currently. However, the Council are still committed to the much-needed improvements to coastal defences in the area, to reduce the flood risk to 130 properties in Alverstoke over the next 50 years.

September 2022

Work to reinstate the area at Alverstoke is now complete and the pathway between Little Anglesey road and Clayhall road has been reopened to the public. We are continuing to investigate future funding options for the Gosport Coastal Defence Scheme and will provide updates when applicable.

August 2022

Due to a series of unforeseen site risks and severe cost inflation pressures in the civil engineering industry, construction work at Alverstoke has been put on hold until further notice.

Reinstatement work has begun on site and has been prioritised to be finished before the end of August.

The site will remain closed until the reinstatement works are successfully completed. Following this, the footpath between Little Anglesey Road and Clayhall Road will be re-opened to the public.

A plan for resuming delivery of the project is being developed.

January 2022

The scheme to the improve flood defences at Alverstoke commenced in January 2022.

Work is underway along the footpath at the western end of Stoke Lake to prepare the area for construction. The footpath is closed to the public and an alternative route is in place.

When completed, the new defences will offer protection to many houses, community amenities, and infrastructure from the impact of flooding.

Autumn 2021

We are currently working with our contractor to finalise the programme and start date on site to achieve the optimum programme. It is anticipated that site works will begin in late November 2021, with the majority of the works planned to take place after January 2022. The estimated completion date is Spring 2022.

Further updates will be added as the scheme progresses
