Rising Sea Levels

In recent years, homes, roads and other infrastructure along the 246km of coastline managed by the Coastal Partnership have been increasingly affected by flooding, resulting in a growing risk of both flooding and coastal erosion.

The Langstone Community experienced significant flooding in recent winters, with April 2024 recording some of the highest tide levels ever seen in parts of our region. The higher-than-normal tides, combined with an intense storm surge, caused damage and severe flooding to residential and commercial properties, as well as the local Road network.

The scheme will reduce the risk of coastal flooding and erosion along the Langstone coastline. It will keep Langstone and Hayling connected, helping to support resilient, thriving communities into the future.

New and improved defences will support the area for the next 50 years and bring many benefits including:

  • Helping to keep the only road access to Hayling Island open for over 17,000 residents during storm events.
  • Supporting the local business community by reducing flood risk and helping to ensure key supply routes are not cut off.
  • Helping to preserve Langstone’s, community, landscape and heritage
  • Safeguarding and enhancing Langstone’s natural environment

Covering 1km of coastline, the scheme will be delivered in five sections. Each section has been designed to reflect the local environment, while creating spaces that are safe, accessible and welcoming.
