New coastal defences along the north of Portsea Island are now complete!
They extend across the coastline of Anchorage Park and the northernmost part of Eastern Road, providing one of the highest standards of flood protection in the country outside of London. The defences are designed to reduce the risk of coastal flooding and erosion to the area over the next 100 years.
The first stage of the work went from Ports Creek Railway Bridge to Eastern Road bridge. This included construction of earth embankments and a sloping rock revetment to provide the homes behind with flood and erosion protection. These works were successfully completed and the area opened in 2015.
After a pause in construction for the overwintering bird season, work resumed in April 2016 for the stretch of coast between Eastern Road bridge and Kendall’s Wharf. This construction work was successfully completed in October 2016 and the area is now valuable community space.
Extensive landscaping work has been carried out to enhance the area around the new defences. The new embankments have been seeded with a mixture of coastal wildflower seed mix and meadow seed mix, creating a pleasant environment. Also, hedgerow screens and new trees have been planted the embankments and through the linear park at Anchorage Park to further enhance the area.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the local community for your patience and support throughout the work. We hope you will really enjoy the new defences and the benefits they bring.
These new defences are the first stage of the multi-million pound Flooding and Coastal Erosion Risk Management scheme being developed across the north of Portsea Island, from Mountbatten Centre round to Milton Common. The whole project will reduce the risk of flooding and erosion from the sea to 4,200 homes, 500 businesses and critical infrastructure including the Eastern Road over the next 100 years.
